How Much Does Facebook Actually Share?

Threat Level: 3

Even with everything out today, Facebook is still one of the most popular social media platforms used.  It gives its users an opportunity to share, keep in touch, and express themselves to their “friends” list.  And that is one of the great perks about Facebook – the user is in full control of what they want to share and who they want to see it.  But what happens when that control is no longer there?

Facebook admitted that they exposed private photos from 6.8 million users’ accounts.  The apps that got the photos were only supposed to see a limited amount of them, but instead a bug allowed them to see all photos – even photos that they weren’t granted access to.  What photos did they ultimately get to see? Any photos from user’s stories, as well as photos that were uploaded but never actually posted.

Since this occurred at the end of last year, between September 12th and September 25th, whoever was affected would be well aware at this point, having received a notification alerting them that their photos may have been exposed.  Facebook has worked with developers to delete copies of photos that weren’t meant to be seen. In total, 1,500 apps from 876 different developers may have accessed people’s pictures.

Although Facebook has explained that the bug had to do with an error related to Facebook Login and its photos API, and has showed remorse by apologizing to everyone who was affected, this is not the first time a privacy issue has come to light.  Yes, Facebook can continue to apologize and make changes so their users feel safe and secure, however it just proves that when it comes to the internet, not much is private. It’s important to remember to tread lightly when it comes to the internet, especially social media platforms that you have an account with.  Of course, the point of these platforms are to share photos, experiences, and your everyday life, but there is a very fine line when it comes to what users want to keep private, and what is actually kept private. If you remember to keep your private life private, maybe you will be spared any unwanted exposure.
