How to Quickly and Easily Spot Phishing Emails

It’s Monday morning. You are sitting at your desk, coffee in hand, and as you go through your emails, you come across one that seems a little off. Is this a safe and legitimate email? How can you tell this isn’t a phishing scam?

The best and quickest way to easily spot a phishing email is by using the SLAM Method. What exactly is the SLAM Method?

  • S – Sender: Analyze who the email is coming from and be aware of any misspellings in the email address. If you don’t recognize the sender, don’t open the email.
  • L – Links: Links are very common in a phishing email. It’s best to hover over them first, without clicking on it, to see what the URL is.
  • A – Attachments: If there is an attachment, think about who is sending it, as well as if you are expecting it. Never open an attachment from someone you don’t know.
  • M – Message: Look closely at the content of the message in the email, especially any misspellings, weird wording, or bad grammar.

Not being able to spot suspicious emails is a common danger, so the SLAM Method is a great way to determine this. As you go through, if the email in question doesn’t pass this method, then it is best to simply not open it. Sometimes, phishing emails can still be so real looking, that they can slip through the cracks. If you happen to open a phishing email, it is best to inform your supervisor or IT department/company as soon as possible to limit any damage.
